Prasoon Joshi has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification on 11 August 2017.. He is Indian lyricist, screenwriter, poet and marketer. He is the CEO of McCann World group India and Chairman (Asia Pacific), a subsidiary of global marketing firm McCann Erickson.
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) (often referred to as the Censor Board) is a statutory censorship and classification body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. It is tasked with “regulating the public exhibition of films under the provisions of the Cinematograph Act 1952”.
Prasoon has received the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award three times, in 2007 and 2008 and again in 2014 for the Hindi movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. He has also received the National Film Award for Best Lyrics twice, for his work in Taare Zameen Par (2007), and Chittagong . He was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2015, for his contributions towards the field of Arts, Literature and Advertising
Films can be publicly exhibited in India only after they are certified by the Board, including films shown on television. CBFC India is considered to be one of the most powerful film censor boards in the world due to its strict ways of functioning.
Prasoon presided by chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani, Pahlaj nihlani took the office of the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on 19 January 2015. Soon after his appointment he floated a new set of extremely strict guidelines under which few curse words will not be allowed even in the ‘A’ category. He also said that depiction of violence against women will be discouraged and it will be ensured that no content which may hurt religious sentiments will be allowed.
