Rohith Vemula’s new video has come in light where he said that He is an Dalit from Guntur. Few polical parties were raising question on the caste of Rohit Vemula. Commission set up by the centre’s Education Ministry also raised questions about his Dalit status. Rohith Vemula, 26, killed himself days after he and four other students were suspended by the university and barred from its hostel. The Justice Roopanwal Commission report, submitted earlier this month, said there is no proof that Mr Vemula’s mother V Radhika belongs to the “Mala” Dalit community, with which the scholar identified. I am a son of a daily wage labourer and my mother has raised us,” said Rohith. Rohith also said that his “spat with the ABVP is not a new one.” It was after a fight with students of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP, a student body affiliated to the BJP, that the university took action against Rohith and the others.
“Recently the university has taken the decision to suspend five Dalit students and they have expelled us from hostel premises and they have said that the notice we serve says that our presence in public places, hostel premises and administration building can be treated as criminal acts,” Rohith said in the video.
Through months of protests over Rohith’s death, his fellow students accused union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya of the BJP of pressuring the university to punish the five scholars. The fight may look like a political fight and there may be some involvement but Dalit angle is being used by the opposition to take issue in other direction. This can be fight between the students of 2 different parties. College campuses where politics is allowed such fights are common. But it is unfortunate that a young boy give up on such political fight.
